fill in the blanks double fillers Model Questions & Answers, Practice Test for ssc cgl tier 1

Directions:

In each of the sentences given in these questions, there are two blanks indicating that some words have been omitted. There are four alternatives given. Choose the one that best fits the meaning of the sentence as a whole.

Question :1

Suzerainty is ________ control over a ________ .

Answer: (d)

Question :2

The different moods of the subjects had a direct ________ not only on what was observed but, even more ________, on the meaning of what was perceived.

Answer: (c)

'Even more than' or 'even more what' do not work as short phrases. 'Even more accurately' can but option (b) when placed in the blanks does not present a clear meaning. Option (c) suits the statement perfectly.

Question :3

________ language may also be termed as ________ .

Answer: (d)

'Scurrilous' is 'grossly or obscenely abusive'. 'Exiguous', in option (c), means 'scanty' or 'small'. 'Eloquent' language may not be necessarily scanty in use of words. Option (b) has 'peripatetic' meaning 'itinerant', 'going from place to place on one's business'.

Question :4

________ persons are inclined to ________ .

Answer: (c)

'Obese' refers to being very fat and 'corpulence' is 'bulkiness of body'. Unlike the other options, in (c), both the words have the same meaning. This is important in the context of what the sentence means. 'Domineering' and 'temperance' [option (d)], for instance, are somewhat opposite in sense and 'vacillating' and 'determination' [option (b)] mean opposite things.

Question :5

She was a/an ________ liar who had mastered the art of making untrue statements in a manner that sounded ________ .

Answer: (a)

An 'incorrigible' liar is one who is utterly given to lying and who cannot be easily improved. 'Plausible' (adj.) is 'seemingly reasonable or probable' but not really so. 'Congenial' means 'agreeable'. 'Convincing' and 'blatant' in options (d) and (b) will suit the first blank but 'illogical' and 'incongruous' in the same options will not suit the meaning of the given sentence.
